Marantz PMD 660 Recorder

D. Stone asked about the Marantz recorder.

At work we have a Marantz PMD 660 digital audio recorder.  It is far superior to any of the Sony MD recorders I've seen.  It has dual XLR inputs and records in a variety of non-compressed formats including 16 bit, 48kHz stereo WAV files (CD quality audio). Our faculty and graduate students use the machine for recording film soundtrack audio as well as more mundane tasks (like interviews).

The downside is that the Marantz is 3 times the price, 4 times the size, 6 times the weight of a Sony MD recorder, but then, good audio equipment is always more.  If you've got the money and the need (and the mics - two, high-quality, condenser mics required), this (or it's higher priced brother, the 670) is an excellent choice.

There is a good review of the machine at:

Disclaimer: I am a computer geek by profession, work for the Univ. of Calif., and have to interest in the Marantz Corp aside from the products they produce.

Everything is perfect, it just needs a little improvement.

Re: Marantz PMD 660 Recorder

Thanks, Bruce.

I just stumbled across this site with the Edirol, Marantz, Zoom, and other solid state digital recorders...

Your Marantz really does look like a professional unit.  The nice thing about non-DAT and non-MD recorders is they don't go through significant mechanical wear during use.  So maybe I'll wait a year and watch eBay for a used Marantz...

Re: Marantz PMD 660 Recorder

I had an early PMD-660.  It's entirely possible that Marantz has improved things, but this unit was rather hissy, and it was awfully easy to clip the microphone preamp.

I bought one modified by Doug Oade  ( www.oade.com ), and it is a world of improvement.  Highly recommended.

There's some good information about recorders here:
