G'day everyone,
I've been interested in learning to play the Japanese shakuhachi for quite some time now, and I'm hoping this message board will help me out on this journey. I am an "absolute" beginner when it comes to shakuhachi... I know nothing of the notations, playing styles and whatnot, but as crazy as it may sound... I've already made my very own shakuhachi! (out of wood, not PVC.) I can get several octaves going on it, but I am struggling with tone clarity and breathe. I have been making and playing Native American flutes for quite some time, so I do have a bit of a background on flute playing and making (in general,) but I had never had the "guts" to learn the shakuhachi. It's a whole different kettle of fish. I do feel ready now! I keep thinking about the old saying: "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear." I am hopeful. Cheers to all!
