Aburanuki a year after harvesting....

Is aburanuki necessary if the bamboo has been lying in the weather for a year or so after being harvested?

I just picked up some small (too small for Shakuhachi but maybe ok for something else) Missouri-grown bamboo from a lady's back yard today.  I harvested some live bamboo but the majority was cut down last summer and left in the weather since then.  Will any of the oils remain for such a long time outdoors?

Thanks in advance,
Travis

In my experience the shakuhachi I make out of weather beaten/sun dried culms produce the best voice, I don't know why.
