Hi Kees. My impression is that a blunt edge will lead to a slightly more diffuse airstream. This can be a desirable quality in ji nashi but not in ji ari shakuhachi. There is often a big change in some notes, particularly ro-otsu, when the utaguchi insert is tapered to become sharper. However, this may be due more to the change in the diameter of the utaguchi. I don't think it is layers of urushi that make the difference as the relationship between utaguchi diameter and the rest of the bore profile. I hope this helps, Phil.
