Opening up the bell end....

Hi there,

Just wondering, if you open up the bell end of a shakuhachi, it raises the pitch of the flute....right?

My question is, does it raise ALL the pitches equally?   or just RO?  If i have a flute that is tuned ok to itself but, is just a hair flat, can
i open up the bell end and VIOLA!! all is well?   I'm sure it's not that simple but any help would be great.  Thanks.

Jacques

It's better to keep your mouth closed and let people "think" that you're stupid, than to open it, and remove all doubt.

It mainly raises Ro and it is a common solution to the problem of flat Ro. I have done it on several flutes and even seen it on flutes by such credible makers as Yamaguchi Shiro. It also changes the tone of the flute (brightens it) so don't mess with your flute unless you are willing to change the tone.
