A shakuhachi product you won't find at Meijiro

The box clearly says "??" (shakuhachi) on the front but it also says "150 mm".  Wow, that's less than 0.5 shaku.  And no fingerholes...  Must be a new kind of high frequency drone.  Enlightenment for $17.50.

(CENSORED)

Apologies to the innocent but I found the link in search results, innocently, myself.  Had to be shared.  tongue

This is of really bad taste!

I hope you realize that there could be people that are under 18 viewing the shakuhachi forum. The device that you posted there is actually for emulating the act of fellatio and the Japanese on many occasion will call this playing shakuhachi. Anyway this is of very bad taste altough I would have a good laugh about it under other circumstances but NOT HERE!

Please dit and or remove your own post before we get it removed as proof of your understanding.

Thanks!

LOL.  Sebastien, remove what you think needs to be removed.  But I think you need to lighten up.

Whether we prefer this reality or not, this is an aspect of "shakuhachi" on the internet.  If it's not to our taste, or we find it surprising, better to laugh than lash out or hide our eyes, I think.  I can't stretch any scenario and imagine a victim of the information I shared.  At worst, I'm simply not funny.  Guilty.

Yours, in half a shaku of raw wide bore,
Darren.

Simply because I can read Japanese!

Now the point is the link points to a pornographic item that is located on a website selling pornographic content. Since the shakuhachi forum does not require us to be over 18 to join we should refrain from including this type of material in our posts! Is that not common sense!!!

Yeah but it's tempting to use this line from their site as an email signature:

"Including a variety of personal massagers, we also bring you some great products for men like Girl in a Cup, inflatable Japanese love pillows (Dutch Wives), and more."

Even at my advanced age there is so much I don't yet know about.

Good priorities. I had a joke ready here but unfortunately I think that if this link caused some controversy the joke just had no chance at all.

Re: A shakuhachi product you won't find at Meijiro

Hmm
Bad Taste Humour - I'd have been suprised too if I knew how to run the search Darren was doing, and am not suprised , or shocked that it was shared.
I find it interesting that this slang usage of the term Shakuhachi has not been mentioned here before, and even more interesting that although it used to be referenced on wikipedia, that particular piece of information has now been removed!
(Although it does explain the strange looks I got when explaining to a young Japanese student that I like playing Shakuhachi...)

As to the young and suposedly innocent (I wasn't aware of Exactly what it was without the explaination) the internet as a whole has much greater hazards than vaguely risque jokes about "marital aids" - in my experience of young teens on the internet (and I can't imagine this forum being of much interest to the very young), they are not really that interested, and probably less easily shocked than I am.
It would be nice to know to what extent children are shielded from this sort of thing in Japan; the UK and US appear to be much more concerned about this sort of thing than most of continental europe for instance?

All in all, snigger .... but a funny once.

I found one similar to this on Ebay, can anyone identify the maker?

Hanko reads: "Made in Hong Kong".

Re: A shakuhachi product you won't find at Meijiro

OK I have been inundated with complaints on both sides of this controversial post. Canadian vs. Canadian, Zen Master vs. Zenmeister, can't we all get along? So I am erring on the side of caution by removing the link, those of us who saw it had a good laugh and any minors who might be corrupted will be spared. But I'm leaving the debate intact for posterity. Personally I don't care about sex or poor taste but some people do and I hope this is a suitable compromise.

Re: A shakuhachi product you won't find at Meijiro

Seems fair. I was informed about the slang use of the term "shakuhachi" by Japanese freinds only after I tried to explain to several people (with poor to no English) over there that I was a student of the thing.

I was travelling with a chap named "O'Shaugnessy" and some of the more imaginitve (and subversive) of our Japanese travel companions considered his name (in the way that they pronounced it) to be quite like the Japanese for "piss the bed" or like... no such thing as bad publicity of course. Maybe someone can explain.

Regards,

Harry.

Sebastien, I think common sense is overrated.  But you're a good guy so I'm sorry if my post ran across the grain of your sensibilities.

Popular culture planted a kinky zit on our musical shakuhachi face.  I pointed at it and laughed.  Would a young shakuhachi music enthusiast on the internet be harmed by my post?  I doubt it.  What internet user can't laugh along with a searching for the sacred ending in a discovery of the ridiculous or nasty?!

And to Harry...  the *cough* instrument you saw on eBay...  if it's urushi-coated, I'd avoid it.

To recap--
We are in danger of corrupting a class of people who fit the following profile:

They must be underage.
AND
They must be able to read Japanese.
AND
They must be able to read English.
AND
The must be able to endure the collected rubbish that our esteemed community of hippies, geeks, and old farts writes about bamboo flutes.

CONCLUSION--

Everybody relax; mythical creatures are made of hardier stuff than you and I.

Sure don’t worry about my sensibilities I have seen all kinds personally I am not offended by it wink as I said in another context I would have seen this one as very funny.

My point was more to the fact that the link goes to a porn website then if you try to get in from the main page will ask you to confirm your age. Although I still think this was a bit towards bad taste you could have just saved the pic then pointed it to your url etc…

My main concerns are the following.

#1 This was a pornographic item that was referred from a pornographic website. We as adult should know a bit better than point to this type of websites especially when there could be kids watching this. The probability is not very high but anyhow we should be a bit more responsible.

#2  Even if this is a friendly forum I still think that a bit of professionalism should be observed in order to make this forum well maintained and behaved so that the general public does not get a bad image of the forum. This point should be considered as my personal opinion.

#3 the website in question IS a registered website among many databases to identify porn websites. Lets say I browse this at work then it gets flagged to my Login ID and station and at the end of the week I get busted for browsing a porn website. Was I really browsing porn = NO but I still went to one of those links so I would be somehow guilty to the face of my employer.

I truly feel that we should look at the bigger picture when we take actions like this one and we think it is harmless. Mindfulness does not only exist in the temples sutra book and when we play with swords or Shakuhachi it is here and now.

Re: A shakuhachi product you won't find at Meijiro

The slang meaning of shakuhachi seems well known in Japan and is probably something good to know since if you're a shakuhachi player living or traveling in Japan you may find yourself the target of a joke about it at one time or another.  I can understand Gishin's concerns but also the humor of this issue.  After all, what would life be like without 'Girl in a Cup' and 'Dutch Wives?'  Alas, even after several decades in Japan I've never managed to come across these items personally though I've heard about inflatables in a Roxy Music song somewhere...  It was probably a good idea for Tairaku to err on the side of caution.  As for Harry's friend O'Shaugnessy, perhaps his Japanese acquaintance imaginatively mixed the syllables of his last name around to O'Nesshaug, as the pronunciation for that has the literal meaning 'while sleeping, doing'...bedwetting, in other words.

Too much thinking and not enough belly laughing.  I'm sticking with that defense.

Sebastien, I share your concern for a healthy forum, even if I use different methods.  And the offer stands... if you're ever on our Pacific coast here, I'll be your friendly host and show you a good, organic, Vancouver time...  Hey, speaking of kinky... did you know we serve "Quebec Style" poutine in Vancouver with vegetarian gravy?  The fact that we call it poutine really pisses off some Quebecers...  wink
