Would anyone who loves shakuhachi avoid learning under the tutelage of a traditional certified instructor if they had the opportunity? Probably not.

I could imagine someone hating Hendrix if their thing was Lawrence Welk or Kenny G.
Not personally mind you, but I understand the concept of "there is no disputing matters of taste."
I'm about the only person I know who likes more songs by Yoko Ono solo than I do by John Lennon solo.

Is it usually a sincere point of principle for them, or another way of saying "I can't afford formal lessons"?
I'm the walking definition of unsocial, and as much as I would like to train under a qualified traditional instructor, if it was someone I couldn't stand on a personal level I would hold out until another opportunity presented itself. Also, I generally wouldn't gripe about money, but it would be unlikely that I would drive more than an hour in any direction to attend lessons. Quirks abound.

You don't have to be social to learn from a teacher; you just have to pay attention.

i'm the exact opposite.... i have to drive 8 hrs (one way) to take lessons with Phil James. I've only had a few but i'll continue to do it until i'm able to find one closer....or move.
I'm a music teacher myself...(14yrs) and i still take lessons...... Perry Yung takes lessons.... if the pro's still take lessons....... then I DEFINATELY need lessons...... and i'm gonna do whatever it takes to get 'em...
just my opinion...
