Terms glossary

Not strictly Technique, but i think it fits here.

I am a very new player [started today], currently searching for a teacher[but thats another story] and i have got to say, the terms everyone is using are confusing me to no small extent.

i did run a brief search but i was unable to find anything so could people either:

A tell me where i can find a list of all of these terms [names of notes, techniques, anatomy of a shakuhachi]
or
B list some of the basics here.

as a side note i have a decent grasp of western music theory covering scales, harmonic theory and modes, i can also sight read western music, its just the Japaneses terms and names i am having trouble with.

Thank you

We have such a post on the general shakuhachi stuff forum. Here's a link:

Many of those are not that common but the list also has certain very common terms. You'll pick up the common stuff very quickly since it comes up in every discussion. The rest of it you can often google for if you can't find the terms on any list. I think most people on this forum assume that the reader knows basic terms which usually means stuff that has to do with playing. More complicated terms that may not be common knowledge often get explained.

Names of the notes are easily found from a fingering chart. Here's a topic on those.

Keep in mind that few notes have different names in different lineages. Confusing stuff but doesn't come up that often. The most common notes are usually the same and odds are that people point out when there is an exception that could change the meaning of what they are writing.

That covers part of what you asked but certainly not everything. When in doubt, google. Almost every term you can think of can be found that way. It doesn't take long to get used to the basic terms that pop up everywhere.

Hope this helps. I've been planning to put together something like this for a long time but my laziness has stopped me from doing it. One of these days, I'm sure.

Re: Terms glossary

Thank you, that is a great help.

Now i can understand what people are saying, and with a little work maybe even communicate effectively smile

Re: Terms glossary

We have a "search" function here, so when you come across a term you don't know, enter it into the search engine and see what comes up.
