SHAKUHACHI PORN (or pics of beautiful shakuhachi).

Some forum members refer to looking at pics of exciting flutes "Shakuhachi Porn". So I am starting this topic for people to post pics of beautiful shakuhachi for the other members to look at. And also because I want to see what google ads pop up with this topic title.

I'll kick it off with a picture of 4 outrageous jinashi by Gudo Ishibashi.

L-R 2.0, 2.4, 2.7, 2.8

The 2.8 is the biggest flute Ishibashi has ever made. We pretty much used the 2.0 as one of the prototypes and inspirations behind Taimu, but then Taimu came out differently anyway because Ken is different than Ishibashi.

Re: SHAKUHACHI PORN (or pics of beautiful shakuhachi).

That red-brown 2.4... how do you make bamboo look like that? The root suggests that the bamboo itself is roughly normal in color but the rest of it goes between reddish brown and dark brown. It doesn't really look like urushi coating, at least not one that has spread out evenly. Is there something on top of the bamboo or does the bamboo itself seriously look like that?

Anyway, nice flutes. If you are taking requests, take a picture of all the flutes with decorations on them. That is, unnatural decorations that weren't in the bamboo such as paintings, carvings and such. You already posted a handful of those in various contexts but it would be nice to see a group shot of whatever nice you are still hiding from us.

The 2.4 bamboo is susudake, smoked bamboo.

Maybe I will have to make a "Pay Per View" if you want to see all the little details and closeups. wink

Hmmh, didn't notice this the first time I looked at the picture of all those flutes. Isn't the fourth flute from right the wooden Kikusui 1.8 we talked about earlier? It didn't seem unusual in a picture with nothing but that one but the bore seems to be pretty wide at the end. It is nearly twice the size of some of the larger flutes. I guess that when working on wood one has the freedom to go crazy with the measurements because the size of the material you are using no longer makes much difference.

Re: SHAKUHACHI PORN (or pics of beautiful shakuhachi).

I think this thread is getting to be a little too much for me... I'm getting hot flashes.

One thing I really dislike about my shakuhachi passion is that my craving for better and more beautiful shakuhachi is about as un-buddhalike as one can get.  Such a painful paradox.

Here's my (well, not quite yet, the transaction isn't complete yet) new hocchiku from Brian Tairaku Ritchie. You can click on the images to get a bigger picture:

BTW, it sounds great too. If anyone knows if I should be doing anything to help keep the decorations intact please let me know.

I didn't notice that. I guess you're right about the freedom of not being restricted by the nature of the bamboo, but wouldn't that kind of thing mess with the acoustics of a conical bore?

Also, and just to clarify I think we're talking about Tairaku's second picture in this thread, isn't that left-most long one not bamboo too? Maybe plastic???

Yeah, it's plastic. It's from the same thread that I mentioned which you can read here:

http://shakuhachiforum.com/viewtopic.php?id=2079

Interestingly enough, the end of the bore on that one seems to be pretty huge as well. Given that those are both from the same maker, I wonder if all of his flutes are like that or if these just happen to be exceptions.

The first thing you need to do is determine how the decorations were applied--enamel, urushi, sumi. Treatment that would protect one might damage another.

No, Brian said he did not know. There's two signatures on it, I would have included them in the photo's if I had noticed them at that time. I know that sounds a bit unusual but I just received it very recently and up until now haven't had much time to look at it and somehow I missed them. I'll see if I can find the time tomorrow to update that post with pics of the signature.

I suggest just leaving the calligraphy alone; wabi-sabi, and all that....

You need to balance that with a few shakuhachi made of Reynolds 853.

At least we can agree that (short of bamboo and maybe Ti), steel is king.  And Real Steel bikes have lugged frames.

Brian, those look a bit like On-One Mungo bars to me.  I've run those on two singlespeeds I've built and maybe another very soon.  Love them.  Sort of a moustache, sort of better.  Easy on the eyes and hands.
