The only music I heard coming from a Shakuhachi was Zen-style music or slow music (shika no tone as an example) I have yet to appreciate those styles. But does it have to be definitely for that style of music?
I would like to play minyo (Japanese folksongs) on Shakuhachi and I have seen it done on youtube and on a Japanese music CD I heard.

Hello Eclipse,
As for traditional music, there are some sankyoku pieces that have some really fast parts. For example the piece included in the Yamaguchi Goro's sankyoku collection "Nebiki no Matsu". It's an unbelievable piece from beggining to end, and the last part is just pure heavy metal!

You can play many kinds of music and definitely as fast as you want!

No, but I would recommend using it for relaxing music. Or giving an element of relaxation. I've always wanted to use one in Metal. Someday I wanna make a song that will make people want to headbang and meditate at the same time.
