The Tairaku Sideways Kari Bend!
Hey, I was fiddling around with the shakuhachi and got those sideways kari notes that Brian makes. Pretty neat. This raises the pitch and is pretty easy on ro...works nicely on chi as well. I'm not sure in which context to best use them, but making ro sharp (to 'ro kari') was a nice way to check my pitch on tsu meri, which, like most beginners, suffers from sharpness or indistinct pitch most of the time. The timbre is different; much more open than a meri note--well at least for a beginner such as I. It gave me another way, at least, to try and tackle Riley Lee's beautiful lines on "El Sueño", which I like to try and play from time to time. I say 'try' because being able to rapidly move through meri notes and keeping them perfectly in tune (and sounding as open as unbent notes) is beyond me at this point.
Tairaku, when do you use this particular trick?

Hi,
I think, what Axolotl means, is going to kari(or dai kari) position by not lifting chin in the frontal body axis(i.e. perpendicular to shoulder line, seen from above). He does it more to a side - thus uncovering the top hole without more difficult up/down movement. Kakizakai and Furuya, Yokoyama´s students, utilitize this rather often.

I usually use this technique to go from dai meri to the regular pitch.

At a recent competition in Australia, Tairaku received an average of 9.5 from the judges for his sideward kari bend. On returning to normal position, he totally "stuck it," receiving an ovation from the crowd.

Huh...so it's used, but not by Tairaku, who is bending sideways to bring dai meri to normal...but other folks use it to bend from normal to kari.
I will continue to tinker with the permutations. Perhaps one day I too, will be able to land a 360 stalefish dai kari sideways bend while ollie-ing off the uttaguchi. Gnarly!

Actually now I remember that I do what you describe during "Tamuke" to go from Ro to Tsu meri pitch. Party on!
