Brilliant clarinetist, multi-reedman, composer, improvisor Jimmy Giuffre has passed on at the age of 87. Let's all listen to his music today and remember his genius.

And I have you to thank for really turning me on to him. I've been a big fan of Lester Young's clarinet playing (what little exists of it on record) and I've heard of Jimmy Giuffre many times, but never found recordings and appreciated him until your mention of him on this forum.

He reunited with his classic trio (Paul Bley and Steve Swallow) in the mid nineties and made a few CD's. I was lucky enough to see their stint at Sweet Basil around that time and it was brilliant. Swallow couldn't make it one night so Gary Peacock filled in! Although he was clearly feeble off the bandstand the music was still great. Shortly thereafter he stopped performing.

Free fall and some of his other trio recordings from the early 60's are among my favorite recordings! I listen to this material very frequently.
Giuffre was a genius!!

WOW!
Just got my hands on a copy of Giuffre's 'Free Fall' -Incredible! You won't find it in the stacks labeled "Soul and R&B", but this is SOUL Music! ...You just FEEL it! WOW! (did I say that already?)
Thanks to all those who posted on this thread for turning me on to this guy. If anyone cares to expound on the relation between Giuffre, Shakuhachi, and Improvisation, I'm all ears!!
