Re: what kind of shell is this?

He  is playing a Horagai 法螺貝.

The monk in question is a Shugenja 修験者 (Yamabushi/ 山伏) connected with the Tendai school according the type of Yuigesa he is wearing.

Re: what kind of shell is this?

Looks like a big conch.

Creative activity could be described as a type of learning process where teacher and pupil are located in the same individual.

Re: what kind of shell is this?

There is a couple of place around Kyoto that deal in Shugendo equipement but it will be hard to buy it and get it shipped out. There seems to be a ban on import/export and dealing of those shells. Also some of the places will only sell to monks or to legit members of a Shugendo branch. I think this has to do with the rarity of the object.

You can look on ebay I have seen some of the smaller ones for sale sometimes. But a good big one can be anywhere from 1000$ if you are lucky and upwards.

Re: what kind of shell is this?

Found some decent smaller cheaper ones for you. maybey they are made of a different type of shell since I feel they dont look as good as some of the ones I have handled.

Now all you need is get the scores and learn to play wink For this you will mostly need to join a Shugendo branch.

about 500 to 600 U.S with the basket around it. But those are small ones only none of the big fat ones we usually see.
