Hello from Kanagawa

I have been lurking on the forum since I got my Yuu a few weeks ago, but decided to post an introduction after a couple of members I have been corresponding with privately encouraged me to.

There's not really much to say. I have played other instruments before, mostly string instruments, but never gotten very good--I think mainly because I spent too much time learning music theory and not enough practicing/listening mindfully. I decided to try shakuhachi to sort of reset the learning clock (whole new mechanism of producing sound, whole new repertoire) and also to improve my breathing. I'm really enjoying the process so far and feel like it's improving my ability to listen attentively to music in general.

My current teacher is a Japanese min'yō specialist, a very friendly guy and happy to explain technique as well as demonstrating it. I eventually hope to be able to play something like the Myōan-ryū records at komusou.jp, as well.

I live in a quiet part of Shōnan, which means that in the mornings I can choose whether to practice on the beach with the surfers or in the park with the dog-walkers. My day job involves translating, writing, and coordinating other translators and writers. I also write a blog, mostly about Japanese language and literature, at no-sword.jp/blog.

I've already learnt a lot from the folks here and look forward to learning more. Hopefully I'll be able to give something back someday too.

Re: Hello from Kanagawa

welcome to the community Matt no-sword. It's great that you get to play on the beach, I'm jealous. Having grown up 10 miles from the ocean and now I live over 200 miles away, it is something that I miss greatly.
I am sure that you will gain a lot of knowledge, inspiration, confidence, and maybe even a few laughs while you are here. Enjoy the journey!

Re: Hello from Kanagawa

Welcome to the forum No-sword.  It's good to see another foreign resident in Japan taking up shakuhachi.  Good luck with your practice; sounds like you have a nice pick of practice locations.  I've found that playing outdoors is usually a lot more fun than playing inside.  With a minyo player as your teacher you should have an interesting experience; I don't think there are many foreign players who have learned under minyo specialists (but there is probably someone...Clive Bell, perhaps?, known for his work with minyo).  Cool blog! (my grandmother used to direct Chekhov plays in little off Broadway theaters back in the 1940s and 1950s; The Cherry Orchard was one of her favorites; never got to see the plays myself!)

Re: Hello from Kanagawa

Thanks Damon, Daniel. I think it'll be a while before I can do justice to the places I practice--I definitely lucked out there. Fortunately the folks around here are too polite to complain.
