Kurahashi Yoshio Sensei announced at the farewell dinner that he'll be throwing the next WSF in Kyoto in 2012. This is great news!
Any thought being given to what time of year the 2012 WSF will be? What is Kyoto like in July?
"... has a justified reputation for its ferocious summer weather of high heat and sapping humidity with few cooling breezes."
Not much different than FL in the summer.
Ummmmmmmm. Memories of the American Booksellers Assoc. Convention in 1993. Deplaning in Miami from a cool temperature controlled 747 to the most ghastly climate I've ever encountered: 98-degrees farenheit, and 90-percent humidity. I was wearing a silk shirt (hey, it was 1993!) which immediately vacuum-sucked to my torso like thick plastic wrap. It was the beginning of a week when every time we stepped outdoors it was as if we were walking through hot chicken soup.
So, spring or fall, then! *crosses fingers*
This book gave me very vivid dreams of Kyoto in the fall:

I really hope they avoid the summer, as Chris mentioned it really does suck. Unfortunately that's probably when we can gather the most amount of people. Not sure if they'll actually have it in Kyoto city though. This year was interesting going from a nice spring temp here to "winter" in Sydney (it's not like winter in Buffalo so I had to "" it ), but then returning to Japan was just as Chris described it. Stuffy, wet air...
Copied and pasted from an email from Kurahashi:
I am happy to be able to announce about the World Shakuhachi Festival in Kyoto.
It will be held from June 1st to 4th 2012.
The registration and the welcome event will be done in the afternoon/evening of May 31st.
The details are to be announced.
See you there!
Early JUne should be wonderful weather temperature wise. It could be very rainy however. The heat doesn't usually kick in until later in the month.
Glad it's not in August. I'll do my best to get there though!
The Festival will really use all of Kyoto!
In addition to other venues, there will be performances at Meian-ji, in Machiya, Elementary Schools, even in Sento (Public Baths) !!
I will be taking those to Japan who would like to join me , as I have done every year since 1980.
In the past 31 years I have taken Shakuhachi Players from the USA, Canada, Europe and Australia - all are welcome.
Except that in 2012, I will be offering 4 different options:
1-Just the Festival, plus a day before and a day after (plus the day you lose traveling)- 7 days.
2-Kansai : Nara (Tenri-Shi), then Kyoto, then the Festival, and then Home.-15 Days
3-Festival plus Kanto. first the Festival, then Tokyo, and then Home.- 13 days
4-All inclusive: Nara (Tenri-Shi), then Kyoto, then the Festival, then Tokyo, and then Home.-21 Days
The price will be unbelievably low !
I will post more information as the time draws closer.
But feel free to contact me concerning any questions or ideas.
