Carl Jenkins Requiem

Anyone familiar with this piece?   How is the writing for shakuhachi?  What level of difficulty, would you say?

Thanks,

Mark Miller

Re: Carl Jenkins Requiem

There are 5 sections and of those 1 is difficult and the rest are easy. The reason that one is difficult is that it's not written by someone who understands how shakuhachi works. I learned it recently and conferred with Riley Lee, James Schlefer, Michael Gould and Clive Bell about it. Everybody agrees that you need 2 or 3 different shakuhachi to play it "best way". There was consensus on some of the songs that they were 1.8 or 1.6 but other songs could be played on a few different flutes. I ended up using 2.3 (Bb) on the first section but James Schlefer swears it should be 2.0 and I think some of the other dudes used 1.8. Otherwise it was pretty obvious that it was either 1.8 or 1.6 for the other tunes.
