hi guys,
what length flute Yokoyama used for the November steps?
What do you recomend?

I may play that in school.

Kiku has a cool jinashi version she performed...somewhere in Europe, sorry I can't remember exactly where right now. Not an easy song to get through.

Hi Geni.

As Ed wrote November Steps is written for a 2.4 or a shakuhachi tuned in A.
I played a jinashi 2.3, which was by luck tuned to 442 Hz.

Geni, I have sent you a mp3 file to you by Yousendit.com. I can't put it up on the net as the orchestra is professional and the recording is done by the Danish state radio.
If you are going to play NS and if you have questions, I'd be happy to try to help. Are you just going to play the cadenza? It is a huge and fantastic piece to play.

Its going to be for my graduate recital. I am trying to put together 35 musicians:-)

You are welcome, and thank you for your kind words. All in all I think it was a good performance. And the orchestra plays well, I think.

So, you are going to try to play the whole thing. That is a big job! I love your enthusiasm! It would be amazing to play THAT piece at your graduation!

Remember that the orchestra is split into 2 sections (the strings including the harps), then there are the third group consisting of woodwind/brass and percussion. So suddenly 35 musicians would mean not that many people in each group.
Who would you employ to play biwa?
Where are you studying and what degree?
Anyway, good luck with it all, and let us know along the process how it is going.

I am doing my masters at New England Conservatory of Music (Boston) in the Contemporary Improvisation Program with Shakuhachi & Flute.
I don`t know any biwa players in Boston. But, I may use an awesome Guitar player to play the biwa part.
you right about te orchestra..just got the orchestra score. Will find a way to find all those players. Thats for a non profit show so will have to make some compromises:-)

I will keep you guys posted.

They are going well. I am doing a transcribtion of Yokoyama`s playing. He is playing with Canadian orchestra.
Its interesting, because Yokoyama plays the piece diffent in different recording.

The el guitar player is doing the some for the biwa part.
For the moment i am just rehearsing as duo.
Will start with the orchestra in February. My recital is April 8 . 8.30 pm. First part is Novemeber Steps, Second part some originals (mostly contemporary jazz).

Your playing in the recording is great! Great sound!
