Go to this YouTube page:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLK7jFd0 … playnext=1

Just to the right of the video that comes up, you'll see a playlist of 15 songs (okinawa minyo), submitted by 'Uminchutochan'. Good for starters.

Also, a Google of 'okinawa minyo', or 'minyo of okinawa' will give you many links.

Fun to listen to the link Edosoan. Thanks for bringing it up. I got curious though, can you or somebody please explain me the differences between this Okinawa music, some music from Hawai and the folkmusic from the Molukkan islands in the Indonesian archipelago?

If you listen to them, you will hear the differences...

Re: traditional music of Okinawa

Does anybody know of a source for Kinko notation (or Western notation) for any of this Okinawan stuff?

I looked there and couldn't see anything. What notation system?

It was Kinko notation I even remember seeing it sold one time on Ebay once.

Re: traditional music of Okinawa

I ordered a good  starter book of Okinawa minyou from Amazon.co.jp.
The voice and sanshin parts appear in Western notation, and there are two tab systems for sanshin.
There are all kinds of introductory books on sanshin that use Western notation (since most Japanese are more familiar with this), but unless you read Japanese the explanations are useless to you. This book has two pages of explanation and 90-plus pages of music, so is better suited to western musicians.
The title is:
沖縄三線で弾く 島唄 沖縄民謡ベスト20 弾きやすさNo.1の三線TAB譜と工工四つき (楽譜)
but cutting and pasting  沖縄民謡ベスト20 into the search box will get you there.
