Yung Flutes Shakuhachi making Workshop

I am leading a two-part Zen Bamboo Shakuhachi Workshop on Feb 7, 2009 .
Part One: Beginners Section, 10am - 1pm. One non-root bamboo stock and use of all necessary tools are provided.
Part two: Spot Tuning, 2pm - 4pm, is geared for those who can already play the shakuhachi and want to apply fine tuning techniques to their instruments, 2pm - 4pm. Participants can bring a pre existing flute to work on. All materials provided.

The costs are $85 for Part One and $75 for Part Two. Those interested in both sections pay a discounted $120.  Chinese Madake root end piece are available. Contact me directly for availability of lengths -1.6 to 3.0 - and quality $40 - $80.

Making and playing your own shakuhachi flute can be a immensely
gratifying life experience. For me, there are few things in this world
more joyful than waking up and blowing Choshi on a flute crafted by my own hands.
Join me in a personal shakuhachi making workshop devoted to crafting
your own unique bamboo flute. I will share some of
the traditional techniques I learned while studying under Kinya Sogawa,
a professional maker and player in Japan who was an uchi deshi (live-in
apprentice) of Chikusen Tamai. Participants will take a piece of raw bamboo stock
and take it from the beginning stages of drilling and cutting to refining the
utaguchi angles and tuning the tones holes. Everyone will leave with a functional and relatively well-in-tune shakuhachi crafted by their own hands. This experience will allow the participants to greatly deepen their
relationship with the instrument and it's tradition.

Place : La Mama theater's rehearsal space at 47 Great Jones (East Village, 3rd St between Lafayette and Bowery).

Space is limited so those interested should RSVP ASAP.  Payment can be made on the day of the workshop.

Please contact me at perry (at) yungflutes (dot) com with any questions what so ever.

Hope to see you there! - Perry

Re: Yung Flutes Shakuhachi Making Workshop New York City Feb7, 2009!

I went to Perry's shakuhachi making workshop last week, and I had an AWESOME time!  Perry was great, enthusiastic, and really helpful.  He brought all the tools we needed, and had some nice, precut pieces of bamboo for everyone.  He explained the process as we went along, and he was able to help everyone make a playable flute.  I was really impressed that everyone made workable flutes, even some of the folks who had never even played shakuhachi.  He gave the beginners a short flute playing lesson after we all made our basic flute.  Later that day, he went into depth on fine tuning the shakuhachi for pitch and resonance.  It was a really energizing experience and I left feeling jazzed up about flute making.   I recommend it to anyone who loves shakuhachi.

Thanks Tom! I'm actually a little jealous of how well your 3.0 turned out with only 3 hours of work!

Hello Everyone - Perry's workshop was WONDERFUL!!!!  Hard to believe in a few hours a shakuhachi could be made that was actually very playable.  With a little more work it will be a very nice jinashi shakuhachi.  Highly recommended to anyone who plays.  Very INSPIRING!!!!  The only problem is once you make one you'll just want to start making more.  Thanks again Perry for a GREAT Experience!!!!!  To all Be Well, Bob Blyman.

Thanks Bob, Yes, once you get hooked, the biggest obstacle to happiness would be keeping a usable stock of bamboo around!

I was not conscious whether I was riding on the wind or the wind was riding on me.
