this one is for all you professional Take tweakers,
I have a 1.65 that I have been working on and the bore is pretty "in the raw" still. I was wondering how much do you have to bring the node walls down to the surface of the bore if you plan to fill the bore in with ji or another paste material? It is a pretty wide bore flute as Ro at this point sounds breathy and just a half step or so above D. Would it not be advisable to only bring the node walls down to the specs that I want for the finished bore then add ji paste around the nodes? I know that having as little ji in the bore is advisable, but in this case I am not sure. Most of these inquires are theoretical though, as I probably wont want to mess this flute up; ive got one special for this type of work (frankenflute).
Any thoughts?

Hi Ben, I would bring the nodes to the specs and plaster around it. It can help to hold the plaster in place.

Trying to find a Ji paste substitute, I wanted to stick with the lacquer/powder tag team. Would diatomaceous earth and lacquer work?

Fix-All can work as a tonoko powder substitute. Add a little urushi and water to form a paste. It's found in most hardware stores. Make sure to seal the bore before applying. Otherwise it will draw the moisture out of the bamboo and increase the chance of cracking.

Some makers are now using body putty for cars. It is permanent, dries hard quickly, and is easily workable.

Mind you I know nothing, absolutely nothing, about shakuhachi making but going to the forum's search function:

and entering "wood filler" gave me this:

and Toby's following quote:

Wood putty or car body putty work well.
Plus Ken also recommended these links on the forum.

Sounds like good advice. Now I know at least three things about shakuhachi making that I didn't know before.
There are volumes and volumes of information on shakuhachi making on the forum. The search page http://shakuhachiforum.com/search.php is a great gift
