oval shaped top end

well not so much oval shaped as football shaped.  I eluded to it's purpose on "my second shakuhachi" thread. a nice happy accident.

pics of the oval the quarter is there for size comparison. the flute plays in B. it is well tuned for 2 octaves but the third is very elusive. not nonexistent  just elusive.

Re: oval shaped top end

Todd,

Yeah, I prefer a slight oval as well. Maybe a little less obvious than that. It seems to make it more comfortable. The size of the opening makes a big difference as well. Too small, too much focus. Too big, hard to find.

Ken, I look at your photo here and keep expecting King Kong to climb over one of the buildings. Can you make a shakuhachi for King Kong?

I already have!

That background is a photo of San Francisco in 1960!

Re: oval shaped top end

Lance, Looks great! Oops, I mean Todd. Sorry, I have over 400 emails in my inbox.

Yes, this is fine. For me, comfort is #1. As Ken says, the size of the opening affects the tone and how the flute takes air, but if it is not comfortable first, one may not play the flute. Once you have opened it to the size you think may allow the best playability and sound, try a tuning bean directly under the ikigaeshi and down an inch or two. I found that that area can greatly influence the general character and overall playability of the flute. Let us know what you discover.
