shakuhachi today

Hi! My name is Roberto Sallustio.
I study in Rome, Italy and
I'm working on my graduate studies
thesis in Ethnomusicology about
shakuhachi. My main purpose is to
understand what stimulates you
to play this instrument and analize
the situation in which it
is played.
More over, my target is to focus on the way in which shakuhachi is re-contewtualized outside Japan, mainly in Usa where its use is widespread.
Because my interest is in particular the social and cultural context, I want to deepen the reasons that urge you to play this instrument, expecially nowadays.
If you interest in my project and ypu want to help me in my work, please send me back an answer.
Thank's

Re: shakuhachi today

Why do you post identical texts in different topics?

I picked up my first shakuhachi for various reasons:
- I have ties to Japan
- I was fascinated by the simplicity of the instrument
- I needed to get back practicing a musical instrument

Since then my fascination for the instrument has grown,
mainly for the following reasons:
- its tonal and musical complexity
- its ties to buddhism and japanese culture

Does this answer your question?
Good luck with your studies.

Re: shakuhachi today

I started to play the shakuhachi about 1 month ago, I want to play the instrument because:

*  lifelong interest with Asian cultures
*  specific interest in Japan and Buddhism
*  played oboe and saxophone for many years and now want something culturally different
*  interest in ancient instruments (eg. didjeridu)
*  find the sound completely unique and beautiful
*  fits completely into my mind-set (body/mind/energy movement) - very important
*  it seems to epitomize a lot of connections between body/mind in one small and happy 1.8 deal!
*  health (related to above)
*  aesthetically the whole package appeals to me

Each part of the body should be connected to every other part.

Re: shakuhachi today

I use it as a musical instrument and as a meditation tool.  The specific tonal qualities are very appealing to me aesthetically and it is fun to play.

Ah, the ancient pond.
A frog makes the plunge;
The sound of water.
