Picture of sound

I just felt like sharing this picture because I think it is cool! This one came out especially nice.
I was at Queen Mary University here in London all day yesterday to work at the electro-engineering department there. It was interesting to meet all these people also working with music - but such a different take. They were all scientists.
This is a a screenshot I took during pitch analysis of different flutes I recorded myself playing. This particular one is a Neptune jimori tuned to A.
The orange squares that forms a bottom line is representing the fundamental sound played. The reason for the line is raising is because of the pitch raising. The first one on the left is ro, the next to its right and a little higher up is tsu, and the next re. Thus what you see is:
ro - tsu - re - chi - ha/ri - i/go no hi and then again ro - tsu - re - chi - ha/ri - i/gono hi. You can see that the pitch of the sixth and seventh note are the same (i/go no hi and ro in kan).
All you can see above the bottom line are the partials.

Re: Picture of sound

Hi Kiku, very nice pic. I assume that you are comparing different flutes to each other, so I'm curious how you get a standard note (embouchure), how long a sound sample is used for each analysis?
I've played around with Audacity (Plug Plug).
This is Ro on a yuu and my favourite - short samples from each, over layed in different colours.

But if you look at full sample I'd say there is as much variation within each note as there is between the two flutes (first 3 Ro's are my Boo, then 4 on Yuu)

Mostly though I use the pitch analysis, sometimes with strange results.

Can you tell what it is yet?

Thanks for sharing its interesting to see what the Pro's can do, I'm looking forward to seeing more X-rays and frequency analysis when you are finished
Just idle curiosity really, but I do find your project fascinating.
Now get back to work and stop playing on the internet  ;-)

Re: Picture of sound

Looks great Kiku. What programme did you use? I have many examples of different effects such as muraiki herehttp://www.shakuhachizen.com/acoustics.html

Re: Picture of sound

That would make a great CD cover.

Re: Picture of sound

WOW ! That album cover looks cool. Will you sell me the design, Dust? wink

Ambi, I only made really simple stuff because I lost my sound files (I deleted them by mistake myself when I synchronised the back-up hard drive with a wrong file..... Very stupid, I know!) I only managed to retrieve less than a third of the files and most were broken. So, I was only measuring pitch this time.... which is not really what I planned to do. So, ot much pro in that area for me. Oh well.
Thanks for sharing your analysis pictures, Ambi and Phil.
