Concerto

For those interested in hearing the shakuhachi in an orchestral setting, here are Youtube links for the premiere of my Shakuhachi Concert. The premiere was at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City on May 13 with the Sonos Chamber Orchestra. It is in three movements, hence the three links, and it is scored for shakuhachi solo, string orchestra harp and three percussionists. The music at first doesn't appear to be very "Japanese" but in fact many of the melodic and harmonic elements derive from Japanese scale patterns and Gagaku, and some of the rhythms are Taikoesque. But it is ultimately my own original music influenced by the rock and classical music I grew up with and the everyday sounds of life in New York. -James
