Quick/temporary repair...

After finishing a 1.6 Hocchiku I sat down and played it for about an hour...
when I heard this distinctive cracking sound..
upon inspection I found a crack from the top to the 5th hole.
Knowing that I was out of CA glue..
I tried cable ties as a temporary solution...
It worked really well.

I was on a theater tour once and my flute cracked in the hotel. I wish I had the cables then! The best thing I found were metal hose clamps. Not a beautiful site on stage but they got me through the show smile

These days, I always have a wooden back up flute in the dressing room.

Re: Quick/temporary repair...

Here's a tool from the bicycle repair domain, generally called a '4th-hand cable tool' that is perfect for applying pressure to zip-ties to tighten them (much more than can be done by hand) that would be a useful addition to this great idea:

Using zip-ties like this would also be an excellent way to secure a crack before applying binding. The tool pulls on the long tail to apply tension before cutting off the tail.

Available from Amazon and on eBay for 20-25 bucks. Well worth the cost if you use zip-ties very much.

Re: Quick/temporary repair...

Only bammnboo I have had snap right open is the light coloured Chinese 'moso', one cracked with the sound of 'one hand clapping' while I was blowing, but as well, most of the culms I had cracked before being made into flutes.

I have used bicycle inner tube bands doubled up, pretty tight.
