Hallo altogether,
after lurking for a while it's time to introduce myself.
My parents told me i used to play recorder as a five year old. I can't remember that after fifty years (hint: calculate). How did I come to the shakuhachi? Judo -> Kung Fu -> Buddhism -> Theravada -> Vipassana -> Satipatana (Mindfulness while breathing) -> ........ Shakuhachi.
I have got my first shakuhachi 3 month ago and started practicing with a book from Yoshinobu Taniguchi. I used a 1.8 with seven big holes. Within some days i used to produce some sound. It was great fun.
Through this forum i found Jim Franklin and had a first lesson with him. Great experience and helped a lot. First thing to do was closing the additional holes with tape. Second was buying a new flute. I now using a 1.8 student model from Monty Levenson and a Yuu for outdoor playing an travelling. I will go on learning with Jim.
I have had an skype lesson with Michael Chikuzen Gould as well. And i will also go on with Michael. I can really recommend having a teacher. It is of great help.
Enough
Harald
