I'd like to extend my encouragement and praise toward my friend Brian P. from Florida and Michael Firman from my hometown Chicago, Illinois who are playing in a Deshi concert in Kyoto, Japan with Chikuzen, in the third week of November, I believe. From reading his blog, no one more than Brian deserves to be on stage to demonstrate his perserverance for the music of the shakuhachi. He has practiced relentlessly and has followed the Japanese komuso tradition of the Shugyo to improve his playing and understanding of himself and his music. He has sponsored flute camps in his home state to help encourage advanced learning. At flute camp he has always unselfishly assisted all beginning players needing help or obviously lost in translation, usually me! So I hope he earns a Jun-Shihan license , soon, for his efforts to pass on knowledge of the music. I personally have been inspired by his blog and his achievements, so I have also stepped up my practice time, spent more time being more precise with my music rendition, and have even seriously thought about running several times a week to increase my breath duration. When I first met him a little more than a year and a half ago, he was still only an beginner-intermediate student , I think, so he has come a long ways very quickly through sheer determination and desire. Sometimes true stories really inspire, and then to actually know the guy is even more encouraging! Gambatte!

PLUS, Brian has killer tattoos!!!

Thanks guys, you are going to make me blush! I need to practice even more now. I am inspired by everyone I meet here and at the camps. I couldn't have done it without the inspiration of others and of course without the patience and guidance on my Sensei and good friend Chikuzen. He really has inspired me through the hardest times and listened to Tamuke more times than any one person should have to I hope I see you in FL Clinton. It isn't the same there without you! Now I have to get back to practicing Kurokami for the concert
Thanks,
Brian

Hey, Buddy, if I only had plane tickets and a front row seat, I would bring " fresh " Japanese snacks this time! :?) You should perform topless, then after the concert you could get a gig as a yakuza dice croupier wich yer tough full body tattoos. The only dilemma is which tribe would mistake you for the wrong gang signs in the wrong hood in Kyoto's alleyways.

Speedo,
I would hate to get caught blowing my nose in public with the wrong color bandana and then risk the wrong gang association. I am already nervous about walking around a red neighborhood in a blue samue by accident! I better watch my Ps and Qs. I have working out in case anything heavy jumps off. Tats will represent!
Brian out G dog!

You should stream the concert on your blog, so we can attend in absentia, Brian,

That would be cool. I would like to see the concert.

I am going to try to record it. I don't know if they will have wireless at the concert hall. If they do I will definitely find a way to stream it there. Might as well add more pressure to the concert. It's a good Idea. Let me see what happens. Otherwise I can just record it with the web cam and post it on you tube.

Thanks Perry. I really do have to say I am just trying to learn and have fun sharing with other players. I do appreciate the sentiment in the posts though

That's what it's all about!
When you love something, wanting to share it is only natural. Then's it's naturally infectious.

Looking forward to seeing you guys in Kyoto soon. It should be a pretty big event and I'm sure your performance from the heart will be a great addition.

Is this on the 23rd? If it is, then I'll be playing too.
Badly.
*Edit* Just found the flyer promoting your event, I might be playing in a different one. Would be strange to have such similar events on the same day in the same city though..
Is it just Michael Gould and his students? The flier seems to suggest so. I'll ask my teacher and double check! Good luck to those who're playing!

I was led to believe that there would be a few other students playing there also. It is the 23rd at Ikenobo Junior College. is that where you are playing? If so that will be awesome!

It seems too much a coincidence, it has to be the same event! I'll find out. I'm looking forward to it though, will be playing Sanya Sugagaki.

I am playing Tamuke and Kurokami as far as I know.

Sounds good! I'm a little nervous about playing in front of an audience, but I reckon it'll be a good experience.

Do the best you can and play from the heart. It is a deshi concert so they don't expect perfection. Besides, what is perfection with the shakuhachi?

Thanks Brian, that's put me a bit more at ease. I played for the kids at school today, was a bit wobbly at first but after relaxing a little it was much better.

I checked with my teacher on Saturday, looks like I'll be seeing you in Kyoto Brian!

I heard Kurahashi Yodo sensei tonight in concert in Osaka. His Ajikan was in top form! It should be a great concert coming up.

They are there now. Has anyone heard anything?
