Re: Concert in Kyoto with Chikuzen, Brian P. and Michael Firman......

It was a great time all around and Jam played great.  We played Kurokami on stage together with Chikuzen and it was a blast.  I will post more once I am rested.  I just got in!  Thanks to everyone who was there!

Brian, you have tattoos, therefore you are a member of the Yakuza.

Glad to hear the concert went well! Between this and the Kurahashi thang gaijin are takin' it to the streets in old Nippon.

Re: Concert in Kyoto with Chikuzen, Brian P. and Michael Firman......

Just to add my two pence, I thought the whole event went very well indeed, and I was honoured to play on stage with Brian and Michael.

Brian's performance of Tamuke also sounded very good, though I was backstage at the time trying to relax so I was slightly distracted.

Even though I was pretty nervous I think it went ok (despite some dodgy playing later on). I was, despite being an outsider to the group,  made to feel very welcome indeed, and once I relaxed I really enjoyed myself.

The standard all round was very high, and it was a pleasure to listen to everyone, when I wasn't popping out to get a little last-minute practice in! I was thankful to play Kurokami again (with the altered notation!) with Deborah.

I was also very impressed by an up-and-coming Koto player called Cassie from Australia, who's only been playing a few months, one to keep an eye on!

Cornelius Boots' performance of Purgatory (I missed the introduction, was it an original piece) was also really good, the Japanese sat around me were impressed with his playing, and the size too! wink

Michael Firman's piece, the one about a lighthouse (I can't remember the name off the top of my head) was also very soothing and I'm inspired to go hunt down the notation.

Apologies for the brevity and for missing people out, this is only from the top of my head.

Edit: Forgot to add this. My teacher said to me "some of them play better than the Japanese". Thought i'd pass that on!

Re: Concert in Kyoto with Chikuzen, Brian P. and Michael Firman......

On my end the concert day was a little hectic.  My wife got the stomach flu and had to be run back to the Iruya House right before the concert.  I got back and played with the group and then played Kurokami and Tamuke.  I listened to the players in between and then needed to run with my wife's friend to a few destinations they were supposed to hit together.  Then I came back to catch the end of the concert.  I had to miss the after party to check on my wife and make sure she was OK.  I recorded the whole thing with my H4 though so I was able to listen to it all.  It was some great playing and even the newer more nervous guys and gals did great being on stage regardless of their preconcert concerns.  It was great being there and seeing everyone.  I will be posting pictures of the concert up too and will put the link here later.  Thanks again to everyone who made it come together.   I especially want to thank Chikuzen for working so hard and being so patient.

Hey! Brian!   Thanks for all the photo's,   made for a great after-Thanksgiving's treat!    Brought back a lot of good memories of Japan,  and felt like I experienced 20% of almost being there with you.    You looked like that guy Watsupsumido on stage there in your formal dress.  Glad you played well!     Speedo

Thanks for the compliment, Edosan!      Actually,  after hitting the submit button,   I automatically started to cringe in anticipation of the spelling correction Polizei readying for attack!

The spelling is on the money; I checked the Alternative OED.

About that "formal dress," though . . .

The samue is a monk's work clothes--about the same level of formality as surgical scrubs or BDUs.

For some of us, that does make them our fancy duds.

Excellent photos Brian.  It seems that you got a good, broad taste of Japanese life while you were here.  I assume that the coolness of the small, uninsulated Japanese house was getting to you all.  Thank goodness for small mofu!

Thanks Jeff.  It was really only cold there inside one night.  We chose cold over Kerosene heater fumes.  Overall the trip was great and I can't wait to go back next year!  The last of the pictures are linked over at the blog now.
