A very nice 60 year old husband and wife would like recommendations for day trips/tours out of Tokyo from 2/15-18 (MTuWeTh) for destinations with local groups or individual tours to see the real Japan. I'd like to pass on any interesting suggestions to these kind folks. Thanks in advance for your favorite spots to see.

I've not been myself but I've heard good things about Hakone:

And Enoshima:

As well as Nikko:

Hi Tono,
It really depends what your definition of 'real Japan' is. Tell us a little more what you expect.
I really like Kamakura, which has a lot of temples. It also have mountains surrounding it so some of the temples are connected via path through the forest... and it has a beach. It is at the same time a 'normal' a 'real' town.

I also recommend Kamakura and Enoshima, Kamakura for the temples and Daibutsu (big Buddha), and Enoshima especially if you enjoy walking -- nice views of the sea, caves, botanical garden, Shinto shrines.

Yep Kamakura is a very nice trip. There is also a great microbrew called "Kamakura" which is awesome.

Kamakura microbrew is my kind of real Japan. :-)
Real (old) Japan for this down-to-earth couple would include nature and traditional cultural attractions.
Also, is there a place in Tokyo that could help them arrange these side trips?
Thanks all so much for your help!

Kamakura, Nikko, Hakone are three very popular day trip destinations. Nikko might be awfully cold this time of year, but excellent for nature and culture. Some others that aren't bad depending on the couple's interests:
Mt. Takao near Hachioji

Nihon Minkaen, a collection of traditional houses. This can be a half day.

I like Mitakesan, another mountain-top destination, possible day trip, I tend to do it as a one-nighter. It will be cold there.
