hand drums

I put this in the 'shakuhachi related' because I think there is similarity in feel.

Re: hand drums

They are called Hang Drum. Unfortunately hey are almost impossible to get a hold of. They are hand made in Switzerland by a couple and they have a two year waiting list, besides the prohibitive cost.
I was lucky to get a hold of one early on... it goes wonderfully with Shakuhachi...
Here's an little excerpt that a student of mine put up on You tube of a recital we did together:

Re: hand drums

There is a used  one offered on Ebay today with one hour left to go now at $5,500 USD!!!!  Get it now or suffer the two year wait by appointment only in Switzerland.   Even then your number may be bypassed by someone the maker's think are more deserving of their creation.

I was going to buy more, guess I should have. They come in different tunings. Mine is the C minor pentatonic, i.e. open notes of shakuhachi if you play 2.0.

Those are really cool... the Swedish seem to have the innate ability to create something remarkably cool & only release a limited number of them... take the SIDstation.

The hang drum is Swiss - not Swedish! smile

Why are Europeans so fussy? It's just "Europe" to the rest of us! wink

You know, like "Africa". Or "South America." Or "Australia". Or "Antarctica". roll

See what happens to Americans after they have been in Australia for so long !
Their brains start thinking like Australians !

And for those other Americans who think New Zealand is part of Australia, it is more like Australia is part of New Zealand, but we don't like admitting it in public.

Re: hand drums

I have a tone drum I use in concerts often. Like others I really wanted a hang drum but they're pretty hard to get and expensive too. I use a Milltone Tone drum, but in the video on my myspace ("Crimson Sky") I'm improvising to a Wadaiko player using my hang drum. It might be a little hard to hear it because we didn't use any mics but the tone fits beautifully.  I finally got to overpower a Taiko player!!!

In that case I really love the Lou Harrison quote where he calls Europe for Northwest Asia! smile

But you know Brian, the 1000 years of wars between us are not forgotten!
No - just a bad joke.
Just jealousy - don't like the neighbours, the sweedes, to get more attention out of having a name close to the Swiss...
Oh just as bad joke...

Ok, we are just FUSSY!  lol

And the difference is ... ? Both claimed neutrality in WWII.

The Swiss were bankers for the Germans and Sweden gave the Germans unfettered access to Norway.

I bet its a really GREAT drum.

The lamp in my nightlight globe broke when I was a kid. Thank you for the clarification though, I am aware of the separation between Switzerland & Sweden but the only time I've ever had to differentiate before is at Ikea when asking for Swedish meatballs... which I often refer to as Ikea Meatballs or Corrugated Cardboard in French.

From that web page:

Pre note: I'm liking this thing a lot more now that a hang drum sold
on E-bay for nearly $10,000 !

Now, NO one, NO one, NO one in the shakuhachi community would think of charging $10,000 for a shakuhachi ...

Re: hand drums

You would have to be well hung to afford a $10,000.00 shakuhachi....
