Drinks celebrating yet another shakuhachi PhD

Come to celebrate with me !
After month and month of delay caused by the university... tomorrow I will finally finish the PhD.
I have my voce viva (defense of thesis) tomorrow.

I know not many of you are in England - let alone London, but those who are do come to the pub Bree Louise to celebrate with me!

8 pm Monday 22 Feb 2010 at Bree Louise.
Bree Louise is not the fanciest of pubs but it is one with very fine ales near Euston Station.

Re: Drinks celebrating yet another shakuhachi PhD

Hi Kiku and everydody,
Add me to the list of shakuhachi Phds smile I hope we can all get a drink together.
Kiku, you really got delayed somehow didn't you! Go get em'.   II've been pretty busy lately: Last weekend I was down in Kumamoto for Jeff's very successful Kumamoto Shakuhachi Festival (he'll probably let everyone know when he posts some pics etc.), on Friday I had my Phd oral defense which went pretty well, except for the few random nitpicky ossan who generally have a problem with pretty much everything;), and yesterday I was in Ishikawa sensei's student concert, I did Sanya (山谷) on a 3.2.

By the way, to add another name to the list, Shimura sensei's student Izukawa Hidefumi also just graduated with his Phd on the shakuhachi. Somebody should give us all a cool membership badge!

Re: Drinks celebrating yet another shakuhachi PhD

Why don't one of you Ph.D types make a list of the shakuhachi Ph.D's in the world.

And could somebody please tell me whether Ph.D. is superior or inferior to such other honorifics as Shihan, Dai Shihan, Über Sensei, Iemoto etc?

R U having a contest with Ronnie to see who has the most names? Actually somebody should give Ronnie an honorary Ph.D. so he can join the list.

But you didn't answer my other question about who outranks-----Ph.D. or Shihan?

Re: Drinks celebrating yet another shakuhachi PhD

Hey Brian,

Can I have an honourary BA?  Just a regular undergraduate degree would be fine, I don't mind.

And congrats to you Kiku.  The more serious scholarship surrounding our favourite instrument/spiritual brain-focusing tool, the better.  Wish I could be at the pub having one too many celebratory drinks.

Josh,
Big year for you! Baby, Ordination and now Doctorate.  Be careful. You are in danger of becoming an adult.
Seriously, congratulations! You are kickin' some serious booty over there in Nara.

I would argue that academic titles require a lot of intellectual effort and actual contribution to the field in contrast to shihans.

Re: Drinks celebrating yet another shakuhachi PhD

Agreed.  That's a good point to remember.  I actually play shakuhachi to stop thinking as well.  Suffering from a restless mind, this bamboo tube has the remarkable ability to shut down the bubbling water of the mind and bring it down into stillness.  All in all, a pretty useful thing.

Re: Drinks celebrating yet another shakuhachi PhD

Thanks everybody!

The viva or oral defense was really evjoyable! I had a great discussion with the examiners. Excellent!
I only have to do minor amendments like re-thinking the title and put all 5 pieces on CD and not only on DVD. Yay!

And Congratulations to Izukawa and Josh as well!

The list of shakuhachi PhDs. I have added the subject of study too now. Marek, do you know the years and subject of the two Prague shakuhachi PhDs? I suppose their theses are about shakuhachi.
