Re: "the Collectors" ABC tonight

Just caught the show(follow link posted by Takei above).

Nice Brian wish there was much more. Was the show filmed at your home. You should do a weekly program.

Thanks

Re: "the Collectors" ABC tonight

That was GREAT! Well represented. Thanks. Would love to see the footage that got edited out. In my experience, chances of getting a TV network release such material are super slim. Thought I'd ask, nonetheless.

Re: "the Collectors" ABC tonight

Good stuff Brian.  A good representation.  I would argue, from a local point of view though about the adage, '...in Japan, those who play must teach...'.  I suppose that things may be in transition here, because one thing that the majority of Japanese players don't do is teach, at least here in Kumamoto.  It's a problem that creates  consternation in the minds of those who do teach and are getting old (though they don't tend to promote teaching.)  And there's the whole qualification thing as well that basically institutes the mindset that until the level of shihan is achieved, one must not teach and even then there's a twisted aversion to it fueled by the conservative notion of stepping on the higher teacher's toes by taking away their potential business.

Re: "the Collectors" ABC tonight

My main point with that is that teaching is respected more in Japanese music than Western. And I got that based on people like Yokoyama and Yamaguchi Senseis teaching in recent years.

Lots of viewers stopping me and commenting.

Brian,

I was kind of disappointed that they didn't talk about any of the specific flutes. Would you mind posting some pics and giving some details about some of the gems in your collection.

Arigato Sensei! I'm glad to see that the shakuhachi with purple bindings is still in your collection. Fantastic flute!  Also blown away by your ability to play the flute in the wind. Or, is that a special affect done in post production? smile

Re: "the Collectors" ABC tonight

Brian, how are you storing your flutes ?
What are you doing to maintain their integrity ?
Do you have any systematic routine of playing, oiling or moisture control ?
Have any of your flutes deteriorated in any way over time ?

Thanks
K.

I have a humidity controlled humidor which was made for me by a fellow in NYC (who is on this forum but I forgot his screen name). He also made one for Ronnie. However I don't really need that because coastal Australia is already a good humidity level for shakuhachi. I discussed this with Riley before I moved here. He said flutes need no special care as long as you're near the coast.

There is always a chance of flutes cracking, but it happened more often in Milwaukee and NYC due to dryness and temperature extremes. Also you are taking them around from one environment to another in places like that. Australia doesn't have such extremes between the outside and inside environments.

I haven't had any cracking to speak of since moving to Australia. The few incidents could be traced to travel rather than the permanent environment.

I don't oil my flutes because there is no consensus about whether that's good or not. And I don't believe in having dampits inside them and over humidifying flutes in plastic bags. I think that subjects them to extremes when you take them out of the bag. I prefer leather bags to plastic bags because they breathe.

Re: "the Collectors" ABC tonight

The maker of Brian's Shakuhachi case is Chris Yeatman.
The cases are state of the art, and in addition to the ones Chris made for me and Brian, he also made one for Barbara Krooss, and is finishing another for Sarah McPherson.

I have had well over 115 Shakuhachi in my case for 6 years, and have not had one crack!
They don't even need to be in plastic bags.

You can contact Christopher Yeatman at <vze43y2n@verizon.net>.

The year before Chris made my case , I suffered cracks in 30+ flutes (Monty and Perry handled all of the repairs at very reasonable prices).

But now I don't have to worry anymore.

Yes it's a beautiful case. Ronnie do you know what Chris' forum screen name is? I remember him posting here in the past?

Re: "the Collectors" ABC tonight

Hi everybody

Thanks for mentioning the humidors that have been made for protecting shakuhachi from dry climates in NA.

If any body has any questions about these cases please contact me at ChristopherYeatman@geometryformed.com or feel free to post on the forum.  My verizon email is down at the moment.

These days my computer is off line etc. so it may take some time the return emails etc.

My forum name is "Indigo"  In the past I have posted information about the hardware and concepts behind the cases.

The basic idea is the create an air tight box that holds a tray with a sponge and water  that maintains the humidity in the box (by Ronnie's Hygrometer well above 80%).  So far so good.

Thank you to everyone
