Teacher in Ireland

Thanks Harry for your invitation to this forum. I have been playing shakuhachi for over ten years and teaching classical flute for nearly twenty. I studied mostly Tozan-ryuu in Hiroshima-ken for two years but have also studied other styles with various other teachers. I also make my own shakuhachi and will soon launch a website. Watch this space! We are a small community of shakuhachi players here in Ireland but very dedicated. If anyone out there is travelling on our beautiful isle please contact us. We will happily introduce you to our lively traditional music scene and local brew! Philip Horan.

Hello Phil, are you related to Peter Horan the great Irish fluter who may have toured with CCE in the 70s and produced an LP [From the Homes of Ireland]?

Dear Chris et al,

While Philip checks his family tree, and If board members don't mind indulging me this swerve off topic; the recording of Peter Horan and longstanding colaborator Fred Finn available here (scroll to bottom of page)...

...is sublime and is widely considered the finest example of his playing to be recorded. Superb, and legendary, duet on fiddle and flute.

Best regards,

Harry.

ps. I'm glad to see you found the place, Philip!

Re: Teacher in Ireland

Sorry to disappoint but I am not related.  I have heard of him and must check out his recordings.  I am busy preparing for a recital/workshop of Irish music on shakuhachi at the London summer school.  I'll let you know how it goes.  Some slow airs sound fantastic on the long shakuhachi.  Mata, Phil.

Wish I could attend the summer school to hear it.

The Horan and Moran family trees have many, many branches ... and that's probably very fortunate.

The only time I visited Chicago I was asked, more than once, "Are you related to 'Bugsy' Moran?" (of the old Chicago mob, St. Valentaine's Day Massacre, "The Untouchables" etc.)

And when I get too frustrated with my progress on a particular (beginner's) shakuhachi piece I start playing a loud, rollicking, rather odd version of Rakish Paddy on the Japanese bamboo just to get even. -- Cheers, c.
