Hello all from Adelaide, South Australia

Great to be finally able to log-on! (had some java issues!!)

I was led to the shakuhachi through my Buddhist background and a long interest in wind instruments of all sorts.

I've been playing various whistles and flutes as well as reeded instruments (northumbrian smallpipes, shawms, bombarde and other noisy things!!) for thirty or more years. Although I only get to play saxophone live these days and spend most of my performance time attached to keyboards and stringed things.

I'm hoping to introduce the shakuhachi to live performances with "Sympathy Orchestra" (one of my regular ensembles here in Aus) if I can tame this beautiful beast!
I have a cheap bamboo instrument that defies accurate pitching and (since last week) a shakuhachi yuu which is much more playable. Two octaves with reasonable control so far!

I'm hoping to gain an insight into the techniques of playing this deceptively simple object from the postings on this forum. In the meantime, I'll continue hyperventilating in the key of "D".
