Tsukitani Tsuneko article

In the Ashgate research companion to Japanese music (by Alison Tokita)

This is a link to her article, which a pretty comprehensive history of what is known of the origins and evolution of the shakuhachi, and of the development of most of the ryu. Many nagging questions of interest posed here on the forum will be answered here....and many will not.

The link came up in someone's Google search for 'Futaiken Reibo' and the Tsukitani article is chapter 7 of the monograph, of which much more is of interest.

Zen is not easy.
It takes effort to attain nothingness.
And then what do you have?
Bupkes.
