6th hole?

Any guesses as to the tuning of this six-hole flute made by Dan Shinko? (There are lots of holes in this one, actually, with the four vents at the bottom.) When the post is run through a translation service the name or word Horasho is mentioned--any idea who or what that is?

Most likely explanation is that the vent holes as they are called are there to raise the pitch of ro, so that the flute can remain one piece. And not have the root end cut off. So it's a cosmetic thang on the bottom end. The extra hole on the front means it's tuned like a Chinese xiao. This is a xiao I would guess.

As Brian said.

Here is a picture of a shakuhachi made Nishimura Kyoku. He called his instruments "Kyotaku". This is a unique one in that it is made from an extra long piece of bamboo which includes the entire root. The "Ro" hole is about halfway between the bottom of the root and the Tsu (#1) hole:
