World Shakuhachi Festival 2016 Information Release

World Shakuhachi Festival 2016 Information Release

It is with much regret that the WSF2016 Executive Committee has to announce the postponement of the planned World Shakuhachi Festival (WSF) in 2016.

The reason for this is a recent and unexpected change in funding regulations completely outside the control of the applying bodies. While the festival can still expect some support from the Czech Ministry of Culture and the City of Prague, other major sources of funding that have previously supported World Shakuhachi Festivals are no longer available. Without this funding, we feel unable to realise adequately the planned World Shakuhachi Festival in 2016, as we no longer have sufficient time to find alternative sources of funding. We feel that the current financial constraints would impose a severe limitation on the scope of the Festival, rendering it impossible to create a broad-based event in 2016 which would suitably continue the pattern created by previous World Shakuhachi Festivals.

The contributing organising bodies, European Shakuhachi Society (ESS), 108Hz in Prague, and Kokusai Shakuhachi Kenshukan (KSK), are currently examining options for major events in 2016 and 2017. Currently under consideration are:

1) A smaller, carefully-curated international shakuhachi festival in Prague, celebrating the 10th presentation of the Prague Shakuhachi Festival organised by 108Hz. This festival will focus on traditional and (especially) contemporary shakuhachi, and will be held on the originally-planned dates of the WSF, 2 – 6 June 2016, in an attempt to realise at least some of the plans of the original WSF2016 organising bodies.

2) An ESS Summer School, with international guests, intended to be held in July 2016, coinciding with 10 years of existence of the European Shakuhachi Society;

3) A broad-spectrum World Shakuhachi Festival to be held in Europe in 2017, as a collaboration between ESS and KSK.

Planning and negotiations are currently in progress for all of these events.
We realise that such a major change at short notice represents a serious inconvenience to all concerned, and we have not taken this decision lightly. We ask for your understanding of our perception that this is most suitable way to create a World Shakuhachi Festival which adequately showcases the vast spectrum of the instrument and its music without imposing an unacceptably reduced framework.
We hope to see you at events in 2016 and 2017, and will provide additional information as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely,
WSF2016 Executive Committee:

Jim Franklin, Festival coordinator
Marek Matvija, Prague Coordinator
Kaoru Kakizakai, Kokusai Shakuhachi Kenshukan
Vlastislav Matoušek, 108Hz
Kiku Day, European Shakuhachi Society
