This weekend at the Hilton Arts festival I will be doing 2 lectures introducing Shakuhachi. The description is as follows:
'The sound of nature' - discovering the Japanese Shakuhachi flute.
An introduction to the simple yet profoundly beautiful Japanese Shakuhachi flute, said by many to be 'the sound of nature'.The Shakuhachi, an end-blown bamboo flute, dates back at least a thousand years. An important part of Japanese culture, and central to some religious practices, the instrument is becoming more and more popular outside Japan. Used for simple solo meditative blowing by many, the instrument is also used in a wide range of musical applications, ranging from Jazz, classical, and even Hip hop! Capable of at least 64 tones in the hands of a master, the flute's construction is remarkably simple – 5 finger holes, and an obliquely cut blowing edge at the end of a piece of root-end bamboo.
This introduction to the Shakuhachi will include the following:
A brief history and explanation of the Shakuhachi ; Demonstration of flute construction; Examples of Shakuhachi-type flutes; Hearing recordings of different types of Shakuhachi music.
Participants will be welcome to experiment with a range of Shakuhachi- type flutes during the session.
I have 16 people booked so far, and hope to be able to share much on Shakuhachi this weekend, hopefully adding to the small group of interested folk in South Africa.
Cheers

Great John,
It's wonderful to know the shakuhachi has a missionary in Africa!
Good luck with this.
