Is anyone aware of a clear, concise statement on the various musics that are presently played on the shakuhachi? A clear classification of the various movements in other words.
Following the various bits and pieces that I've found on the subject is proving a bit of a 'teaching-dog-to-balance-ball-on-nose-while-jumping-through-burning-hoop-as-lions-circle-hungrilly' task.
And we all know how that feels, right?
You are asking for a lot-a concise description of the shakuhachi repertoire! Check out the introductions to the various schools on komuso.com. Two books on Japanese music, 'Music in Japan' by Wade and William Malm's Japanese music and instruments' have a good summary. I could not find a short article that have a short introduction to all the genres of shakuhachi music from sankyoku and honkyoku to modern pieces, jazz and folk. Maybe someone out there has a good summary on a website? Phil.
