Flute Lengths and Jazz Keys

With which flute length is it easier to play common jazz or western music keys? From my limited knowledge 1.6, 2.0 and 2.1 seem more compatible but with meri  kari it could be a different story ... What do you say?

Re: Flute Lengths and Jazz Keys

from personal experience I would say 1.8.
But, if you are able to play all the scales in a flute, you can play everything there.
longer flutes require more work.

Re: Flute Lengths and Jazz Keys

When playing Western music you can use ro, tsu, re, chi or ri as the root note of your scales. That gives you a lot of options.

I play jazz and western music on shakuhachi and I use all lengths. However if I had to pick a few they would be 1.8 (D), 2.0 (C), 1.6 (E) 2.4 (A) and 2.7 (G). Those will let you play most songs with bassists, guitarists and keyboardists.

Sax and trumpet players use the flat keys a lot (Bb, Eb, Ab) etc. and that opens up a whole other can of worms.
