Re: Ponce de Leon

Admitting that I am as guilty as anyone, I have to raise the question:

This thread is undoubtedly miscellaneous, but what does any of it have to do with Ponce de Leon?

Re: Ponce de Leon

No, Pauline Oliveros has not mellowed out much, thankfully! She is one of the most extraordinary individuals, not to mention one of the most innovative composers, on the planet and i am very grateful to have done so much work with her this past several years.

Re: Ponce de Leon

RP I guess if we can give credit to Marco Polo for introducing spaghetti to the western palate then the least we can do for Ponce is to credit him for the westward trek of the shakuhachi flute..PD
AND...........I have to laugh remembering my grammar school days. I had a teacher in the 5th or 6th grade – Miss De Leon, who told us she was related to Ponce. This was an ‘inner city’ school with all that that entails. By way of contrast here is this sophisticated, elegant Spaniard  who wore a high black comb in her hair and a black shawl to school everyday. She was very specific as to the hereditary details and the family tree etc., and she would bring the ‘proof’ to class every once in a while to show us the greatness of her lineage. I have to smile remembering all this. The funniest thing of all was how she wanted us to be sure to get the pronunciation of the name right. Not “deeeleeeeeeon”. But “day Leeeeoooooooon” with a real long O as in the french pronunciation of Lyon. Very funny lady indeed. Thing is…it was probably all true and we all thought she was putting us on. PD
