Master Dogen.

"Do not follow the ideas of others, but learn to listen to the voice within yourself. Your body and mind will become clear and you will realize the unity of all things.” Master Dogen.

Its been quiet, so I thought I'd post this.

Should we follow his idea? :-)

Regards,

Harry.

The voice within myself keeps telling me to follow the ideas of others.

Re: Master Dogen.

Harry,

Whatever you do, do not follow spiritual advice in an email.  My spiritual practice is based in face to face talk and solitary meditation.  The face to face part is done with an experieced teacher.  The rest is solitude.  Good luck.

Why not? The spiritual journey is not to be feared but shared and experienced in every manner possible? One man's email is another man's inspiration.

jb,
Full circle.  What about spiritual advice on internet forums?  wink

The voice within myself keeps sending me emails and I keep responding but there's no answer.

Re: Master Dogen.

Darren,

If 'that voice' starts telling you to kill, please do let us know!

Generally:

I think I'm big, old and ugly enough to discern good advice from bad, whatever the source. There are some pretty ropey non-virtual 'gurus' and 'masters' out there.

Maybe solitary meditation will keep us right either way.

Regards,

Harry.

Re: Master Dogen.

Face-to-face interactions versus those of electronic mediums...

Approach everything without prejudice, regardless of the medium or person.  Anything else is not empty mind.

Maintaining a preference for a certain medium of interaction means you are holding your cup partially full already, doesn't it?

If one follows Dogen's idea to not follow the ideas of others (Dogen), then do we take the ideas from others?

The paradox here is that if you follow his idea and rely on yourself, you instantly break the rule because you took his advice instead of trusting yourself. If, on the other hand, you ignore his advice, you are basically following his advice exactly. Were this a koan, my answer would be to not answer anything and just go on and keep doing whatever it is that I was doing at the time. In a bizarre way, there is a lot of insight in that advice but at the same time, unless you figure it out for yourself, it's not worth anything at all.

Either way, pondering about that for a moment or two leads to interesting thoughts.
