effects of temperature on shakuhachi
It seems like winter has arrived here in the northeast. We all know about the negative effects of humidity changes on shakuhachi, but as I travel to and from my lesson, I wonder; what about sudden changes in temperature?

Not recommended.
A few wraps in a blanket will obviate this problem.
Zen is not easy.
It takes effort to attain nothingness.
And then what do you have?

Hello,
This is a timely post as some of my students as well are experiencing splitting shakuhachi due to the changes in temperature and humidity. Winter is the worst time for this.
As many shakuhachi makers will recommend, especially in dry, cold/hot climates, when not using your shakuhachi keep it in a plastic bag with a little moisture object like a dampit used for clarinets, saxophones, etc., as well as some kind of instrument case. There are nice-looking cases especially made for shakuhachi which you can buy from sellers in Japan. There are also a number of people in the states making and selling shakuhachi tube cases. You can even make one yourself from PVC piping. A thick blanket works fine too. The point is to keep the temperature and humidity as even as possible.
