Of those who compose music for shakuhachi, I am curious if you generally compose for a specific flute in your collection, or for any shakuhachi. Meaning also: Do you find that a piece builds its character from that flute that it is written on?
Recently I have been writing and have found this to be the case. Certain flutes suit certain styles, much like how when one plays honkyoku or minyo, certain flute sizes are more germane to certain pieces.
In the end though, do you come away with a piece that you think SHOULD be played on a certain length of flute, maybe with certain characteristics (modern, older, jinashi, etc)?

I haven't written much, but tend to focus on the sound of specific flutes when I'm writing. Sadly, I often find a vibe when I'm just noodling around and later can't 'find' it again to write it into a full piece. If you (or anyone else) are willing to share notation for pieces you've written, please contact me by email.

For me, when writing, not only the length of the flute can be determant for the feeling of the music, but also the sound of the flute. But most of all it depents of my own feeling of that moment. I agree with you Zak, I think it's also here the 80/20 rule, I guess 80% of the vibes never end up in a piece.
