Mujitsu and Tairaku's Shakuhachi BBQ

Hi all,

my name is Christian. I am a 30 year old guy living in germany. I have spent long time of my life (more than 15 years) in playing several genres of music, mostly rock, metal and punk as a drummer. In 2007 my band broke up and I didn't have any energy left for music. We really thought that we must work on CDs, get labels, deals, gigs etc. and work as "professional" as possible. Finally I figured out that all the "success" was worth nothing. I had no fun at the end and music didn't make sense any longer. We stopped, and I thought this was the end of my musical life, since I had no goal anymore.

I though lots about music in general and buyed books about Zen. I didn't know whats important in my life anymore, but suddenly I learned that there is nothing which is really important. At least about those Zen studies I learned about suizen and the Shakuhachi which lead me immediatly to buy such a flute.

Now I am not a very good player, but I manage it to get out tunes of it and play the lower and the half of the upper scale. I have a long road with my Shakuhachi before me. But I don't care - the Shakuhachi teaches me more than playing tunes. This is why I love the little flute so much. I play it something btween 5 and 7 times a week and the warm sound reminds my about my faults in the past and about the joy I now feel with music again.

I hope that I can find a teacher in the future, but its rather hard to find companions in southern germany. Till then I will read books like that one of Perry Yung and listen to CDs. Not the badest thing :-)

Be assured that I will follow the topics of this board more in the future and ask thousand dumb questions :-)

Hi Christian and welcome from a fellow punk/shakuhachi player. There are are several teachers for you in Southern Germany please get to one of them as soon as possible and you'll have a bright future with shakuhachi.

herzlich Wilkommen beim Shakuhachiforum, ich spiele auch noch nicht sehr lange aber es gibt schon einige Lehrer in Deutschland, setz dich dochmal mit Jim Franlin (http://www.bambooheart.com/index.html) in Verbindung, vielleicht betreut er ja eine Gruppe in deiner Nähe. Ansonsten könnte ich dir noch Thilo Burdach empfehlen (http://www.tilopa.de/index.htm), ich hatte zwar noch kein Unterricht bei Ihm, er macht aber sehr gute Musik und ist sehr nett. Also viel Spaß beim spielen, gibt nicht auf es ist ein sehr langer Weg und anfangs doch recht schwer.

Ps.: For all the other, I hope it is ok to speak German sometimes ;P

Hi Christian, sounds like you and I are at about the same level with the Shakuhachi. Our path is going to be long and fun, but as you've already mentioned the warmth and joy you are getting from the flute right now is enough to make it completely satisfying already.

By the way I'm a total metal head myself, played in lots of metal-industrial bands, had lots of fun. Don't play metal anymore (not live anyway), just sit at my computer and do it there instead.

Its your recommendation: Jim Franklin.
He is teaching in Nürnberg and Stuttgart. I hope that he teaches a group in Munich or in Augsburg. Otherwise I will try to met him in Nürnberg.

Ah ok, if not there is Thilo Burdach near Munich but Jim is very good and such a nice person, I allready had a lesson with him in Berlin. He not only teaches in Nürnberg and Stuttgart just wait for his replie.
