Mujitsu and Tairaku's Shakuhachi BBQ

Howdy!

My shakuhachi was bought from a Mr. Benjamin Yen in Florida.
He advises that I keep my shakuhachi in a room with a vaporizor.
While I have a vaporizor and this certainly would seem advisable as sent -- without a plastic bag to retain the moisture.
I intend to keep it in a plastic bag in order to maintain the moisture.

When I was looking at the Mejiro site, I saw that they sold olive oil to be applied to the bamboo.
I was wondering if anybody could give me advice about the pros and cons of treating my shakuhachi with olive oil and what kind to use (I have extra virgin olive oil in the house.)

Hi David, a lot of seasoned players I know use their facial oils. I know it sounds weird but it becomes a nice ritual. Rubbing the flute on your face, nose, forehead... you get real intimate with your instrument.

The good thing about that is the excess oil doesn't get into the finger holes and attract dust. Best of all facial oil is free!

Hi David! I use regular culinary Walnut oil on my shakuhachi. It has an agreeable odor, cures fast and is one step below tung oil in hardness. Wipe on a thin coat, let cure for a day or two and repeat. Three coats works nicely.
