Looking for good reading materials. Not necessarily instructional, but something more like Ray Brooks' book, just some good reading. Would prefer something shakuhachi related, but anything musical or artistic and having to do with Zen and/or meditation. Any recommendations are appreciated.

The Single Tone by Christopher Yohmei Blasdel is a great read. It is written from the perspective of the "outsider" studying shakuhachi, among other things, in Japan.
Available from Monty's shakuhachi dot com website.

The Single Tone by Christopher Yohmei Blasdel is a great read. It is written from the perspective of the "outsider" studying shakuhachi, among other things, in Japan. Christopher had a wonderful way with language and is always respectful of the Japanese culture. What's really amazing is that the English edition came second. Christopher wrote the original Single Tone in Japanese first!

Try the late Ken Arnold's memoir, 'Circle of the Way'. Arnold wrote plays and poems (especially haiku and tanka) and was a student of the shakuhachi. He was also an ordained Anglican minister who trained in Zen. 'Circle of the Way' chronicles his life after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2004.
