Single node construction?

I just happened to notice some flutes on eBay. Apparently the maker used a type of bamboo with very wide space between nodes that allows it to be turned into a shakuhachi with no nodes on it except for the one that is used for the chin rest. Here's one link so that everyone can see what I'm talking about:

What I'm curious about is, has anyone tried such bamboo and what were your results? Is there any advantages or disadvantages in not having any nodes? I believe few makers told me that the advantage of using a curved root piece in comparison to non-root instrument is that the curve in the root provides some back pressure and therefore makes especially high octave notes easier to play. Apologies if I got the explanation wrong. I assume the same problem applies here. What I'm curious about is if the nodes make a difference in a non-root piece. Well, I'm assuming that you can't find a root piece that has no nodes as there most likely isn't a bamboo which has such a huge distance between nodes right from the bottom. If there is the question would apply to that as well.

Personally I'd guess that having or not having nodes would make no difference because they end up being filed away and the end result shouldn't differ much or at all in comparison to something that had no nodes to begin with. If that is true the only advantage I can see in having no nodes is that there is no chance to have one that happens to be directly on your preferred finger hole spot. Naturally aesthetics of the two choices are another can of worms that I'm trying to avoid here.

Re: Single node construction?

The root end gives you a tapering bore as the wall of the bamboo gets very much thicker as it approaches the ground. However, my very first flute was not made of root end bamboo, it has virtually no taper, the bore is around 2.2mm diameter and it has a wonderful timbre and plays into the third octave, so there is possibility of making a flute from a single node piece of bamboo.

Re: Single node construction?

That thing is not a shakuhachi.
