It's a particular variety of bamboo, known as 'iron' bamboo (note the two words together above ).

FWIW: I believe a standard paddle bit at 1/2 inch or so with a small power drill and the 'boo held in a bench vice would also work well,
with the added advantage of being available locally and immediately.

Hi David, If you need to open up the bottom of the bore, I think a large round rasp would do the job. The ones in the middle in the photo are made in Japan.



You can find a round wood rasp in the USA that would work well.
