A handheld auger bit.  Looks like this:

Mejiro sells them.  770 yen.  Not heavy, if it needs to be shipped.

Re: boring!?

It's a particular variety of bamboo, known as 'iron' bamboo (note the two words together above smile ).

FWIW: I believe a standard paddle bit at 1/2 inch or so with a small power drill and the 'boo held in a bench vice would also work well,
with the added advantage of being available locally and immediately.

Re: boring!?

Hi David, If you need to open up the bottom of the bore, I think a large round rasp would do the job. The ones in the middle in the photo are made in Japan.

You can find a round wood rasp in the USA that would work well.

Good luck, Perry

Re: boring!?

Hi, David...

1/2" is a good bet.  Any larger, and you risk opening up the choke point larger than may be desired (the bit may want to "ovalate??" during rotation), either mandating fill or living with the consequences.  Just be cautious of the trajectory, as it is quite easy to fire a bit too low/deep near that critical area, ending up with a step in the flow of the true bore, especially in upturned root-ends.
