Re: Teachers in England

I am teaching ji-nashi shakuhachi in London.

I studied ji-nashi shakuhachi for 11 years with Okuda Atsuya in Tokyo from 1989.  Then I returned to Europe (I am from Denmark) andfinished my Ph.D. in performance on ji-nashi shakuhachi and ethnomusicology.

For the 11 years I studied only honkyoku. I teach my students honkyoku from the beginning. Okuda's Zensabo style is very close to Watazumi's playing. I did my MFA in Music performance at Mills College, Oakland, California, USA where I focused on the performance of new music and improvisation.

Presently, I am playing a lot of contemporary compositions and improvising. But honkyoku remains my favourite.

Check my website out for teaching methods and repertoire:

I also teach on Skype.
